Songs of Women’s Suffrage
We celebrate the centennial of women’s right to vote in New York State with a program on “Songs of Women’s Suffrage.” One of the club’s founding members, Alice Cafferty Wales, was a prominent local suffragette and political activist. (Read more about Alice click HERE)
Our program will trace the history of music in supporting American women’s suffrage, from the Civil War era until granting of suffrage a half century later. Some suffrage songs pleaded, some reasoned, some demanded. Many put new words to already familiar tunes. We’ll have songs from 1853 to 1914 in styles from gospel hymns to civil war marches, and even a ragtime piano piece. And there’ll be opportunity for everyone to sing-along a few of the songs.
The public is cordially invited to this free program Wednesday, November 1 at 1 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 305 Murray Hill Road in Vestal next to BU (MAP). Light refreshments will follow the hour-long program.
